Charm City Works runs on a simple loop: someone submits a project, we review it, and if it’s a good fit we organize a build day and recruit volunteers to get it done.

Our main format is Sunday Build — a recurring Sunday session where a small team of volunteers tackles one project together. One project, one morning, real results.

Here’s what that looks like in practice — for hosts and for volunteers.

For project hosts

1. Submit your project Fill out a short submission describing the project, the location, and the scope. The more specific you can be, the better: what needs to happen, how big the space is, what materials might be needed.

2. We review it We check for fit, safety, and scope — making sure it’s realistic for a volunteer group to make real progress in a single session. We’ll follow up with any questions.

3. We schedule a Sunday Build If it’s a strong fit, we’ll add it to the Sunday Build calendar and handle volunteer recruitment and coordination. You’ll know who’s coming and when.

4. The build day Volunteers show up and get to work. You don’t need to manage the team — just be present, be ready to answer questions about the space, and have materials on hand.

What it costs you: Typically just materials. Volunteer labor is free. If material costs are a barrier, note that in your submission — low-income households may qualify for assistance.

For volunteers

Find a Sunday Build Upcoming Sunday Builds are posted here. Each listing includes the project type, location, date, and what to expect.

Sign up Reserve your spot. Space is limited per session to keep the work manageable and the group functional.

Show up Wear clothes you can work in. We’ll have basic tools on hand, but if you have your own bring them. No experience needed — projects are designed to be accessible and guided.

What to expect: A few hours of real, tangible work. You’ll leave having learned something, met a few people, and made a visible difference somewhere in Baltimore.

What makes a good project

The best submissions are:

  • Small to medium in scope — completable in one session with a small team
  • Clearly defined — you know what done looks like
  • Practical and useful — not cosmetic for its own sake
  • Safe for volunteer participation — no hazardous conditions
  • Accessible — no specialized licensing or credentials required

Good examples: painting and refresh work, yard and exterior cleanup, organizing neglected spaces, deep cleaning, minor repairs, small improvement projects with visible impact.

Outside our scope: major structural work, large renovations, electrical, plumbing or HVAC, demolition, hazardous environments, or anything requiring a licensed contractor.

When in doubt, submit it. We’ll let you know if it’s not a fit and why.
